My Teaching Philosophy
The students in our schools today are the future of our country, and I believe that each and every one of them has the potential to become outstanding citizens who can contribute something unique and special to the world. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to help them reach that potential, or, at minimum, to help them on their way towards it. By creating an environment that is conducive to learning, and by developing a complete comprehensive art program that allows my students to think for themselves and grow, I can accomplish my goal while helping them to accomplish theirs.
My classroom will be a place where students will feel safe and secure and where artistic risk-taking can be promoted in an environment that leaves room for criticism, a key ingredient to an excellent art program. The art classroom should never hinder a student’s creative expression, so I will make sure they know that there is no specific right or wrong way to create art. I will also warn them that, at times, they will run into difficult problems, have to deal with doubt, convey opinions, and defend their judgments. I can keep my students’ confidence at a healthy level by giving praise for good behavior, giving positive feedback, and encouraging them to give support to their peers. This will help them to develop self-esteem, advance openness towards the opinions of their classmates, and give them more respect for themselves and others around them.
A very important part of my classroom will be the sharing of ideas and collaboration. I will invite students to converse with each other about the lectures and demonstrations that are presented, as well as new ideas they might come up with. In this way, brainstorming is encouraged so that students will spark each other’s imaginations. My classroom will have a democratic aspect where the student’s input will be taken into consideration in the development of the curriculum. I believe this will give them a sense of ownership, which might make them more eager to do the work needed to master the skills and reach the goals we will have constructed together.
In addition to the projects we will be doing in class, my students will be required to do outside work so that they might develop independent work ethic that will benefit them throughout their lives. The material that will be covered in my course will be challenging, interactive, and relevant to current events, which will encourage excellence in my students. I will have certain criteria that I will expect them to meet, but I will leave room for creativity, opening their minds up for critical thinking. Another thing that will be expected is their following of rules and procedures. I will make my expectations and consequences clear to my students in order to sustain great classroom management.
I want to be a positive role model for my students. More importantly, I want to help them to become more aware of their own beings and help them to discover their gifts and positive attributes within themselves. My students will be encouraged to harness their positive qualities and build upon them so that they might reach their full potential and by bettering themselves, also ultimately bettering the world.
